Prof. Jozef Bíreš, DVM, DSc.

He was born on 7.3.1956 in Banská Bystrica. He completed the elementary school education in the years 1962 - 1971 in Banská Bystrica and the secondary education in the years 1971 - 1975 at the Secondary Veterinary School in Košice–Barca. He graduated from the Veterinary University in Košice, study branch general veterinary medicine in the year 1981. During the study at the Veterinary University he actively participated in the student’s scientific and professional activity. After finishing his studies, he entered the Division of sheep diseases at the Institute of Experimental Veterinary Medicine in Košice, a common workplace of the Veterinary University as the professional, later scientific worker. Since the year 1989 he worked as the internal and external head of the Division of sheep diseases at the Institute of Experimental Veterinary Medicine. Since the year 1990 he started to work at the Veterinary University as the assistant professor of the Department of Internal Diseases of Ruminants and Pigs. In the years 1996 -1998 he was the head of the Accredited Clinical Testing Laboratory at the University of Veterinary Medicine, as a first workplace accredited by the Slovak National Accreditation Commission of the SR at the Slovak universities. In the years 1998 - 2000 he acted as the prorector for the development and liaison with the practice of the University of Veterinary Medicine. In the years 2000 - 2003 he was the head of the School Veterinary District at the School Agricultural Plant of the University of Veterinary Medicine in Zemplínska Teplica. In the years 2002 - 2003 he acted as the Director of the Research Institute of the Veterinary Medicine in Košice. In the year 2003 he was appointed by the Minister of Agriculture of the SR as the Director General of the State Veterinary and Food Administration of the Slovak Republic. He performed this function till the year 2007. From the year 2007 to the year 2010 he acted as the Professor at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Košice.
